review 1: Primarily I felt that the book is biased towards the indian national Congress and some verses revering INDIRA GANDHI.But apart from that the book demands audience with its excellent narration of events happened in the country in first five five decades after independence and especially the turmoil created in the country aftermath the independence is clearly explained including the consolidation of states ,national language of india ,etc.
review 2: Among the positives, this is one of the few books which talks comprehensively about independent India and presents a good picture about the challenges facing a newly born country immediately after independence. However, it is disappointing that most of the book is a collection of biased opinions (without valid logic o
... morer facts). In the foreword, the author mentions that 'the riots of 2002 were the biggest challenge to Indian democracy since independence'. There was no mention of the 1975 emergency or the sikh riots of 1984 in the foreword. All these take away the authenticity that is vital in a history book. The portrayal of all the leaders as being either extremely good or outright villainous makes this book more of a propaganda material for the dynasty. less

It's just a pity that large parts of the book read like blatant propaganda...

Informative but biased reading of history. Maybe because of all JNU writers.
