review 1: At first, I had some trouble really getting in to this book. I could tell it was impeccably done, but I found it hard to keep track of all the characters and tribes. But then I realized sticking through the beginning really paid off as it gave incredible context once the real action started on the Bozeman trail. I am glad I read it and feel a much deeper sense of understanding to our frontier history and the plight of our native people.
review 2: An amazing corner of United States history centering on Oglala Chief Red Cloud and his campaign against US army establishments on the plains of current-day Wyoming 1865-68.Red Cloud is painted as the most strategic of all Native American leaders to martial against the United States on the plains. ... moreeme lengths to color this period of time with a narrative that moves with much more energy than most historical accounts. A wonderful, exciting read that you can almost picture as you read. Better than most histories out there. Kudos to the authors. less
