review 1: The woman who lost her soul was a fascinating character with as many different faces as she had names. Whether she was Jackie, Dottie, or Renee. She was always fascinating. The novel was made up of five different books, all quite interesting. But for me, it was in book three, when she was a teenage girl living in Turkey, as the daughter of an American diplomat, that I really saw how she, in her own mind, came to loose her soul. All the blame has to go to her father who was a ruthless SOB. And in books 4 and 5 the reader sees how she tries to cope with and deal with the emotional scars her twisted father placed upon her.
review 2: Great writing. The violent scenes were difficult to get through, if he hadn't been such an AMAZING writer I would have put the book
... more down within 200 pages (and then again later on). However, the first two-thirds of the book were magically illustrative and I was singing his praises to anyone who would listen (given due warning as mentioned above. Last 1/3rd of the book, was so-so....the ends didn't wrap up as neatly as Schacochis would prove himself to be capable of. less

Too dense and quite misogynistic. I can't recommend but it is on many best lists.

A brilliant historical fiction book--715 pages, so quite a commitment.
