review 1: Where do I start? This was among the most tedious books I've ever read. I should have stopped reading as soon as I realized Shacochis was going to show us that he is among the clever writers who cannot be bothered with conventions like quotation marks. I regret that I did not stick to my vow to boycott any writer who chooses not to use quotation marks. And in this book, it was especially annoying because he has long, torturous paragraphs in which multiple characters speak followed with more dialog from one of those speakers. There just is no real justification for not having the quotation marks. But even had this book contained the quotation marks, it was not worth the time it cost me to read it. The book has too many characters, none of which are likeable. Shacochis must ... morehave signed a deal that paid him by the simile and the run-on sentence. And then there are the nonsensical, gratuitous sex scenes, many of which involve an underage girl and are quite disturbing. The only reason I finished this book is because I really hate to give up on a book once I've read more than 10 pages of it. I will never read another book by this guy. The only positive thing that will come of me having read this book is that I am more convinced than ever that my decision to boycott writers who don't use quotation marks is a great idea.
review 2: This was quite a ride! I knew from the first page that I was in for a great book. The writing! You ride the waves of words that are strung together so beautifully that I didn't mind when I wasn't exactly sure where I was in time - it didn't really matter. It all sifts out eventually. An intriguing story that takes you from Haiti to the Balkans, from Montana to Turkey in the world of special ops, spies, and terrorists. The characters have been living in my head for about a month and I will miss them. Just a terrific read! less
