review 1: There is nothing wrong with this story of a man who was a bomber pilot in WWII. The book tells his story as he is aged out of his job as an airline pilot and decides to go back to the place where his plane was shot down behind enemy lines to see if he can find the people who aided his escape in 1944. The premise is promising, but the book plods along at an agenizing pace. Add to that, the main character is painfully taciturn and emotionally crippled. He was a type of man who was common to his generation: honorable, hard working, holds in all emotions and has only superficial relationships, supportive of his family but leaves the child-rearing to his wife. She has died as the book begins, and without a wife, only superficial relationships with his grown children, and no job... more, he is left floundering. The reader was let in on the fact that he had many emotions, and felt things deeply, but for me that wasn't enough to forgive him for the rigid way he treated others. The book begins when he is 60, and though re-experiencing the events of his youth, he gets in touch with some of his feelings and grows nicer. But for me it was two little, too late. I just couldn't like him or forgive him. I just kept feeling sorry for his poor dead wife.
review 2: This had the potential of being a good story that just wasn't executed proficiently. It was based on a true story of a WWII pilot who was shot down behind enemy lines and hid by the resistance movement. Later in life, he returned to the places and people who had helped him in this difficult situation and kept him alive. I did not like the military "language." Although there was not a lot of it, I found it distracting. I also found the love interest improbable. less

Good story about downed pilot in WW II and his return to the scene 35 years later.

When you are reading this book, there is a conflict between fact and fiction.
