review 1: All the rich, fatty, fried Southern food has gotten a face-lift from Bobby Dean in his cookbook – From Mama’s table to Mine: Everybody’s Favorite Comfort Foods at 350 Calories of Less (New York : Ballantine Books, c2013. 226 pages, photos).I found lots of fascinating recipes of old-favorite, comfort foods from growing up in the south. However, they are backed not fried making them healthier without losing the flavor that makes Southern food great. Reduced calorie ingredients along with fresh herbs and other easy to find ingredients is what bring out the flavor in these simple to follow recipes. Recipes include the before and after nutritional comparison of each recipe along with helpful tips. There are colored photos throughout the book. However, I would have pre... moreferred a few more of the food and fewer of Bobby. Quick to become a new favorite cookbook.
review 2: The recipes claim to be healthy but the writing will make you vomit. Cutesy and phony as plastic. "Shore is Good Seafood Dip"? Please. However, like all the Deen cookbooks, the recipes do look interesting. Melissa Clark is listed as the co-author, so I don't know who is guilty of the ghastly writing, Bobby Deen or Melissa Clark or both.I would suggest maybe trying the recipes but avoid the text, unless you like sugary, phony, patronizing writing. less

Not a bad cookbook. So far everything I've made has been really flavorful and fairly easy to make.

The sodium levels seem too high for a cookbook focused on healthy options.

A little too cutsie, but there were a couple of recipes I'd like to try.
Maryke
Did not get too many new recipes from this one.
