review 1: I was initially so intrigued to read about Golden and his unconventional family of Latter Day Saints. He was indeed lonely despite his wives and busy life. But interest turned to apathy, turned to boredom as the author too often launched into detours with such unnecessary detail that I found myself not caring. I had a hard time getting through once I reached the halfway mark. This book could have been about half its length. Disappointed that such a promising beginning fizzled and died.
review 2: Udall can turn a wonderful phrase. But this book was way too cumbersome to enjoy. Unabated misery for 600 pages made it feel like February whenever I was reading it. Golden Richards is a terrible protagonist. The only explanation for how slow and uncomprehending he ... morewas is that he was mentally handicapped. Calling him a cipher would indicate that at least some emotion or feeling or thought ran through his head or heart. Ugh. less
