review 1: The series 'Beyonders', by Brandon Mull, starts with 'A World Without Heroes', a delightful book that introduces witty characters, large, yet straight-forward plots schemes, and lots of surprises. It leaves you wondering what the rest of the series will be all about. Book 2, 'Seeds of Rebellion', is where things start heating up. The pacing is immaculate, the situations so mind-puzzling, you never know how Brandon Mull will weasel his way out, but he does every time in ways that will make your brain scream with delight. When you think you know what it's all about, that's when you find you are most incorrect, and you're quite all right with it.The thrilling conclusion, 'Chasing the Prophecy', is heart-wrenching, breathe-takingly intense, with so much story volume I don't kn... moreow how it ever fit into the pages. The story's beauty and mass rivals that of 'The Lord of the Rings', but it tells the story in a shorter amount of time, wonderful for those of us readers who are impatient and satisfying for those who enjoy long descriptions. I believe J. R. R. Tolkien would be proud of this man as a fiction writer. I was laughing, crying, and screaming at this book, and my jaw dropped on more than one occasion.I love these books more than the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, more than Harry Potter, more than The Hunger Games.Perhaps only Brandon Mull, my favorite of authors, could possibly morph the words sufficient enough to describe this most remarkable series. In fact, he has.
review 2: Mull did a fantastic job crafting a believable fantasy world for a childrens' book series. A lot of detail and history were included throughout, which really pulled the reader (or at least myself) into the series. I found that there were some very Lord-of-The-Rings-esque elements, mainly in the second book. This series would be perfect for early teens, but it still could be suitable for older kids, maybe even adults. At times it has a juvenile feel to it, but then there are some dark moments that branch into a more mature genre of literature, which I found rather alluring (mainly the character deaths and the rather macabre moments involving the zombies).I have to admit there were some cringe-worthy speeches and some cheesy moments that had me wincing from sappiness, but they were tolerable, given the action the intrigue that surrounded them. Characters like Jason (who I do NOT like) and Rachel attract these moments like flypaper attracts flies, I've noticed. But characters like Ferrin and Nedwin more than make up where other characters come up short. Their harrowing backstories, conflicted motives, realistic doubts...greatly crafted characters. The realistic characters made this series. All, in all, a fantastic read well worth your time. less
