review 1: Violet's father died when she was young, and she's never known his family. She's been raised by her mother and grandparents, who are white, and feels disconnected because she's biracial and most people react oddly when they see her with her family, so she decides to meet her grandmother. It's not a plot heavy book - there's one thing at the end for a pseudo-climax that had me rolling my eyes - but the characters and relationships are great. I don't see the Newbery potential, but I'm definitely going to be recommending this to kids and pushing it for bibs.
review 2: Violet's mom is white and her dad was black, but she looks much more like her dad than her mom. Over the years she's gotten used to the stares when she's out with her mom and older sister, or to peo
... moreple assuming she's adopted - but it's still annoying and disheartening. And to make matters worse she lives in a small town outside of Seattle where there aren't very many other people who look like her. Violet has never known her father's side of the family, but the summer she turns 11 she reaches out to her paternal grandmother - who up until this point has never wanted to meet her. As Violet grows to know her "Bibi" and the relatives on her father's side of the family she finally begins to feel more comfortable in her own skin. I felt like Violet was a bit immature for an 11-year-old, but still really enjoyed the story. less
