review 1: Civil War (or War Between the States or War of Northern Aggression, depending on your views)- a new history told mostly from the views of the South. Clearly identifies the apologists for slavery and shows the conflict started long before 1861. Demonstrates with many quotes the planters knew their way of life was being threatened on a global scale, not just by the North. Without slavery there would be no South or "Southern way of life". Does a good job of unveiling the paradox the Confederate government had using "national" power to continue the war, and the reasons many Southerners detested the Confederate government. The "states' rights" argument is reduced to defense of a single right -- the right to own human beings, and the myriad arguments used to defend the idea, inc... moreluding the extensive use of religion. For anyone wishing an alternative to the current neo-confederate arguments regarding slavery or the war.
review 2: Excellent book. Well written, compelling reading. Presents a detailed account of the social and political consequences of secession and how inherent contradictions and tensions in pre-war southern society led to its collapse and contributed to the defeat of the confederacy. Shows the evolution of President Lincoln's prosecution of the war to save the union and the inevitability of the emancipation of the slaves. less
