review 1: 12 year old Abby finds herself to have no magical abilities in a world that uses magic for everything. She is sent to a school that specializes in teaching those children. The story is about her going to that school and avoiding being sold to unscrupulous people who don't see her as human. At the same time she is lovingly supported by her family, unlike others who find themselves without magic ability. I liked this book. I think I would have especially liked this book as a young person. I thought the concept was inventive and gets high praise from me. I'm happy to see that her family is presented as diverse and very devoted to each other, both for myself and for the target audience. I would have liked more rounded character development and the story is left hanging... more for the sequel.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book. Te adults are fairly competent for a middle grade book (the protagonist and her friends are just good at slipping away.) It takes a very interesting look at Waht it would be like to be without magic and completely immune to it in a world that's full of it. Yet, despite a lot of fantasy tropes, it still has a very modern feel. I hope there's going to be a sequel,, the last couple chapters are just asking for one! less
