review 1: Caitlin Horrocks creates, in a few short pages, characters of such depth that readers will know hem better than they know themselves. Horrocks' language craftsmanship rivals that of Colm Toibin, but her ability to sink inside such varied and disparate lives and points of view surpasses his. The only point of contention here is in the incredible story, "It looks Like This." Horrocks perfectly captures the point of view of her teenaged, rural protagonist except that she repeatedly refers to Mount Vernon, Ohio as "Vernon", which absolutely NO natives do, only Kenyon students, of which Horrocks was one. This was a little distracting, reminding me of the author's voice every time I saw it. This is the only extremely minor flaw in this stellar work, and will only affect those f... moreew thousand of us who know better, so I'm still going with 5 stars. Read it.
review 2: I definitely enjoyed reading this collection of short stories, all centered around female characters. But I wasn't completely blown about by the collection as a whole. A few of the stories interested me more than others. My favorites were "Going to Estonia," "Zero Conditional," and "World Champion Cow of the Insane." I like Horrocks' boldness - one of the stories is in the form of a personal essay, with photographs included. This story reminded me of the end of Jennifer Egan's "A Visit from the Goon Squad." I really look forward to seeing how Horrocks develops and grows as a writer. less
