This is the story of Nina, who works for a magazine.
Nina starts dating Jonathan, who she meets through a personal add, and two months later she becomes pregnant. We don’t know much about Nina’s feelings for Jonathan, whether she is in love or not, because I think the baby thing comes before she is able to register what is happening.
They move in together, and Nina has a baby boy, who they call Ben. In the book we read about Nina trying to cope with motherhood. She feels less ready than Jonathan, who has everything under control. Jonathan is very houseproud, and he boasts about his flat and how he refurbished when he first bought. Actually, Nina thinks he is the only man he knows who buys these interiors magazines.
Nina has a friend, Eliza, who works in publicity for beauty products. When she drops by one day, she asks Nina to bring Ben for a photo shoot, and even though Nina has misgivings, she eventually agrees. They take his photographs, and some weeks later a baby models agency leaves a message on their answering machine, offering more chance for Ben to be a baby model. The problem is that Nina has never told Jonathan about that first time, and when he hears the message, he says that he wouldn’t approve of his son doing something which he considers exploitation. Nina says that they must have called the wrong number, and despite knowing Jonathan’s opinion, she decides to go ahead and call at the agency.
I am enjoying the book. Light, entertaining, and full of humour. I like Nina, but I miss seeing her showing her feelings about Jonathan and Ben.
