Story of Monuments Men
review 1: Great story and excellent read. Scott is in Italy in the middle of the war as part of the military's plan to find, salvage and protect precious art. (as in Monuments Men). Rachel is a military photojournalist documenting the war through pictures. But she’s on a greater quest to find the father she’s never met. It is her last hope to save her mother’s life. Romance and finding an art thief add to the excitement. Add to that, Rachel’s search for a God she’s not sure exists. The book started a little slow for me, but once the momentum built, I didn’t want to put it down.
review 2: This was my first read of a Cara Putman novel and it was definitely worth my time. Rachel is a photojournalist in Italy, documenting the war for the American audience, but al
... moreso trying to locate her Italian father. Scott is part of the Monuments Men, tasked with locating and saving works of art before the Germans destroy them. I liked learning about this piece of WWII history that I had never heard of before. The author does an excellent job with historical detail; her research is evident throughout the story. As I am not an art enthusiast, I couldn't quite connect with this mission, especially when people were suffering, but the author deftly portrays Scott's determination to save what he considers to be priceless. There does not seem to be much action in the middle of the book, per se, but wanting to see if Rachel meets her father kept me glued to its pages. It was not too hard to figure out who her father was but I was looking forward to the reunion. There is more action towards the end of the book as a small mystery is solved (who's the art thief?) and Rachel and her father finally meet but with bittersweet results. I thought Rachel and Scott's romance was believable and enjoyable; they both had issues to deal with. Rachel dealt with abandonment and loneliness while Scott fought feelings of unworthiness. Both find the peace they seek in each other with God by their side. I enjoyed the strong spiritual thread throughout the book and the lesson that Rachel was never alone, God was constantly shadowing her with His grace. less

Very choppy and it seemed to go on a long time. I liked the theme and setting but that's about it.

LOVED this story and did not know about The Monument Men prior to this. I felt like I was there!

Pretty good, not too preachy. Liked the history side of it, especially with the Monuments Men.
