review 1: This was so fantastic! Obviously not meant to be read cover-to-cover, but I'm a nerd, so that's what I did. It is now at the very top of my "books to buy" list, because it is a WONDERFUL resource to have on hand! It covers a LOT of different aspects of grammar in a very concise and easy-to-understand manner. This time through I mostly learned random facts that are scattered through (e.g., my use of British English extends to punctuation, which I was previously unaware of). But there are a LOT of things that I have to look up frequently that I would love to have in a handy resource instead of wondering which websites to trust! I do wish the punctuation chapter were longer, though. It covers the basics, but not even close to everything.
review 2: As a kid I treat
... moreed grammar including punctuation, spelling and syntax with either indifference or outright contempt. Those squiggles and cases, dashes and dots all seemed impenetrable, irrelevant, when all I wanted to do was write about spacemen. Then I hit High School, University and later still the workforce and those squiggles and dashes became a regrettable necessity. So with enthusiasm that was normally reserved for visits to the dentist, I set about learning the rules and regulations of English Grammar.Today, I like grammar (has ever such a sentence been uttered?). I like the way in which so much meaning can be condensed into a single comma, the way proper structure can make a dull sentence sing and how even the most trivial of spelling mistakes can change the tone of an entire text.My Grammar and I (Or Should That Be 'Me'?) is a worthwhile read for anyone like me as child with contempt for grammar, like me as a young adult with begrudging need for it or like me today, an adult with a healthy curiosity for the adverb. I’ll admit at times it is truly baffling and at others painfully boring but hey that’s English grammar.Recommended. less
