review 1: I’m not hooked on Victorian historical romances but this one sounded kinda interesting. Sometimes I venture out of my favorite Regency England rut and I like to try new authors so this was my choice. It was totally predictable, as a matter of fact, it was pretty much the plot outline of “Sound of Music”: missionary returns from India; gets job as governess to a widower with two kids and two teenage nieces; widower needs to spend more time with his kids; governess gets that to happen; father & governess fall in love; “other woman” forces governess to leave; etc. etc. What I did like was the relationship that developed between Sarah and the gardener. That was interesting. What I found that was way over done was so much praying – every single page was drenched in pr... moreaying. Some is effective. I have strong faith, but to me as a reader, it crossed My “Preachyness Line of No Return”.I credit Amazon reviewer E.A.West for stating my opinion perfectly: “I preferred the head gardener's quiet faith to Julia's in-your-face version, but just as in real life, each person has their own way of living out their love for the Lord.” Well said. Couldn’t agree more! There will be other readers that thrive on this genre, but it was overdone imo.
review 2: When widowed and left to care for his two young children and his deceased cousin’s two teenage girls, William finds he needs a governess. He hires Julia Foster who had been ministering young girls in India until her family had to return to England due to her father becoming ill. The author took me back to Edwardian England. The descriptions of Highland Hall and the characters drew me right into the room with them from the first page. I liked how Julia had the courage to stand by her faith and convictions. Julia captured my heart as she cared for this family. I like Christian historical fiction and Carrie Turansky wrote a delightful book. Thank you to Goodreads for a copy of The Governess of Highland Hall for my honest opinion. less

Downton Abbey meets Jane Eyre meets The Sound of Music! A brilliant read to survive DA withdrawal!

It's a Christian regency novel. Super preachy. It would've enjoyed it more otherwise.
