review 1: Carter Quinn has written Avery's story with such insight that I sincerely hope he hasn't personally gone through the trauma and abuse. It was a personal journey for me reading Out of the Blackness as someone very close to me experienced a similar childhood. Don't for one minute think that Avery's panic attacks, lack of control in certain situations and constant tears was over the top or an exaggeration because I can guarantee that it isn't. No insta love here or a miracle cure for everything ailing Avery but a realistic journey he and Noah embarked on to find their HEA and healing. Wouldn't life be more beautiful if we had more Noah's around? A hero in every sense of the word in my book. Plot, character development, angst done well throughout this story. Dialogue flowed na... moreturally between all characters. Strong secondary characters who contributed to the story effectively. Sam, what a wonderful friend and brother he was. I am very impressed with the writing style of this author and look forward to reading more from him. Well done Mr Quinn!
review 2: This was a very emotional book. I felt that the author did a truly wonderful job of portraying the struggles Avery went through to learn to cope with his fears and grow as a person. The story is steeped in Avery's pain and confusion as he struggles to cope with childhood abuse, depression, and anxiety but it doesn't overshadow his steps towards recovery and the full life he's working towards leading. The supporting characters in the book are the best possible version of themselves; possibly to balance out the emotional turmoil that is felt through Avery's voice. Even so, I found this book to be exceptionally well written and it left me with a hopeful heart for Avery. A recommended read. less
