review 1: I quite enjoy true WWII books and I am overwhelmed by the bravery of the men and women who fought in this war. This is the true story of a group on nurses, medics and flight crew of an air evacuation place that becomes lost and then crashes in Nazi occupied Albania. It is a great story and I enjoyed reading about the life lived by Albanians during this time. It was also interesting to hear what the Americans did in response to this situation. I'd give 5 stars to the people who were written about for their courage and survival. The reason for 3 stars is that the author seemed to make a short story long by giving every singe detail of every single minute of every single day from the moment the people enlisted in the military up until they were rescued. I listened to the audi... moreble version and the narrator seemed to be almost "computer like" at times using such a monotone voice that I would become easily distracted. Clean as to language, sex and descriptive violence. Read it if you've had a speed reading course and know how to read faster than my narrator talked.
review 2: This book was so interesting! As a nurse myself, I understand the training that the nurses would have been through prior to entering the military. I had no idea when choosing this book to read that all the units trained in transporting injured soldiers (air ambulances) in WWII were all trained at Bowman Air force Base- now Bowman Field and no longer used as a military base. I live near Louisville, KY and have been to Bowman Field many times. Today it is a small airport mainly used for prop airplanes and private aircraft. I think my jaw dropped open when I discovered this fact. I also think due to that fact, it made this story so much sweeter for me. This story was written after all survivors were dead except for one. Lucky for the author and reader, one member had written an account (a non published manuscript) of all that happened during their time in Albania prior to dying. With the manuscript and the lone witness account much of the story was preserved. So glad to read about this piece of history!!! less

Fascinating story. I gave it 3 stars because I found the structure of the narrative unwieldy.

Unfortunately, an interesting premise turned out to be a tedious story.
