review 1: Went away for a few days, and ran out of books before my 4 hour train journey home. I'd got this as a free e-book from Amazon, so decided to give it a go, when I realised I'd not added the classic I wanted to read. It was moderately entertaining, and passed an hour of the journey, but the characters weren't especially well developed, and the plot was really aimed at a reader around 7. If the next book were also free at some point, I might download it, but I didn't finish the book desperate to know what happens next. For a quest-type fantasy that ends mid-quest, that's really saying something (it was clearly designed from the start to be a multi-part series - the usual pattern is for book 1 to at least get you to a partial conclusion and book 2 to have the cliff hanger,... more so I was surprised it ended at the place where it did.). Shame, because I don't think I've seen a children's series that focuses on druids, and the idea has a lot of potential - I wanted to enjoy it much more than I actually did.
review 2: Jack's life changes when he moves in with Grandpa. He finds a gold acorn and is told that he is "the one" that will reopen the door between our world and the magical realm. And then fix the mishap in history that closed it. Contains magic, shape-shifting, time travel, and and a young boy who just wants to fit in.This is book 1 in the series.I would recommend it to ages 10 and up and anyone else who likes "Potter" types books (but not as dark). less

This book captured the imaginations of myself and my two girls. I look forward to the sequel.

Reading Catherine Cooper's series to my boys - ages 10 and 8 - before bed. They love it.
