review 1: I'm writing this review about a month after finishing the book. I'm surpirsed I gave it just three stars initially, as it has really stuck with me. The characters remain vivid in my mind, as does most details of the story. I'd definitely read something else by the author. The best character was the quirky daughter, who had several lines that really made me laugh. I enjoyed all the different themes explored in the work as well: our life's legacy, debt in friendship, family relationships, are just a few.

... mored of hard to describe why exactly I found it appealing and I think it was both the characters, self effacing, a little eccentric and O'Flynn's treatment of them. This is a kind book and that is rare these days. less
