review 1: Quite a pleasant, easy read - Eamonn and his girlfriend Julia have left England to live in a partly-finished and now abandoned ex-pat community in Spain; but when Julia leaves him, life is not as easy as he thought it was going to be and his meagre existence is brought to a head by a visit from his recently-widowed father Dermot. Dermot enjoys his visit to Spain and attempts to get Eamonn to face up to his problems. Good characters in Dermot and Eamonn and several of the ex-pats who still live in the community and a reasonable storyline. The tale is interspersed with flashbacks by Dermot and Eamonn to earlier episodes in their lives, explaining how they got where they are now. An okay read - 7/10.
review 2: 3 ½ stars. There’s nice pacing and wonderful inter
... moreaction in this father/son story. Through flashbacks and quirky daily routines set in a stark and peculiar half-finished housing development in Spain, they begin to get to know each other in a way they never managed in their “normal” life back in Birmingham. Short, subtle and sweet. Although it’s very different it still reminded me a bit of the Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. less
