review 1: Got this for my friend's daughter and have to confess began to read it to check it out and got engrossed! I loved it and think it will appeal to all ages. Quirky and fun, while at the same time covering some pretty serious topics. What is especially good though is the way that the underlying serious issues are treated. Not heavy duty, or weighed down by moralistic lectures but nicely resolved in a perfect use of show don't tell. A great read for girls of all ages!
review 2: Million Dollar Mates is the first book I've ever read from Cathy Hopkins, (yes, I know that's pretty bad of me!) and to be honest, I wasn't expecting too much from this. I thought it would be a light read for the weekend. Just glancing at the pink, sparkly front cover suggested a flighty rea
... mored filled with a load of girly talk and expensive clothes etc. While it did indeed include this, it was also a lot deeper and meaningful that I had anticipated. Cathy Hopkins surprised me by tackling the loss of someone you love dearly, trying to manage the grief, and how to carry on through life. Hopkins did this gently and used main character, Jess, to show us all of the emotions you go through. I am incredibly glad this plot had that topic, as it added maturity to the story. I sort of wish the cover wasn't quite so glam and glitz, as it probably puts off several people who dismiss it as too girly and with no real meaning. Anyway, on to the characters. Jess, our main girl, was perfect. She was a typical teenager with a lot thrown at her. I loved the story being told from her perspective, as she explained all the emotions about losing her mother, dealing with her new dad, trying to get her around boys etc. brilliantly! I really emphasised with her. The way she talked about her mother leaving a bit hole in her heart made me realise just how important Mum's really are. It's all of those little things they do that make them so amazing. Pia, Jess's best friend, had such a fun spark to her that you couldn't help but love her character. She was cute and caring and is the type of friend you would be lucky to have. Their friendship had me laughing along the way. Of course, how can I forget to mention the boy's? You have Tom - confident, good-looking, and pretty full of himself. Then you have JJ - tall, dark and handsome, down to earth and radiating charm. It's probably pretty obvious who I prefer, but then I guess we just have to see who Jess chooses in the sequel, Paparazzi Princess! Some of the characters fell to the wayside slightly, mainly Charlie and their Dad. I would of liked to read more about the two, and feel they could of offered more to this novel. Hopefully the other books in this series will involve more of them. Sometimes I think people really do believe money is everything. Brand names, big parties, fit to burst purses - I have a friend like that who I would love to lend this book to. It would teach her a few little morals about life. Overall, this was a fantastic read that proved Cathy Hopkins to be a writer that I'm glad I have tried! I definitley will read Paparazzi Princess, which is out now. less
