review 1: Beaded Hope is the story of four women who went on a mission trip to South Africa. Each of them taking this trip to get away. Once there they learned many of the women they were helping were infected with the aids virus and raising children. They saw the women's deep faith in God and determination to care for their family all while being sick. When theses mothers succumbed to their illness the children were taken in by other mothers or raised by siblings. The four women helped start a non for profit by selling jewelry made by the South African women to help them support their families. This book was wonderful. I also had the honor of being invited to a book club where Cathy and Jennifer, the Beaded Hope founder, came and spoke about the book and their experiences/stories ... moreon their trips to a South Africa. They also spoke about Beaded Hope's mission and the women it helps. Their stories were very inspiring and full of hope.
review 2: It's been awhile since I've read a novel. I've discovered that biographies are way more interesting, much better written, and on top of that they can be quite inspiring. But my grandma is visiting, and it is from her that I got my love of reading. I used to sit on her lap as a small kid, and a not-very-small kid, while she'd read me stories, and whenever she comes up, she brings boxes full of books, most of which we trade in at Bookman's, but the ones she considers very good she compells me to read. Some of them are so poorly written I just can't make myself read them, but I usually try to find something among the books, just to be able to share that cameraderie with her still. Well, this one was no amazing work of literature, but it was entertaining in the same way watching a chick flick with a friend might be entertaining. However, this one was in Africa. Oh Africa, there is something about you... something that makes the heart yearn and ache. Maybe it is because in Africa, we have to face the reality of life, and of who we are. In a world devoid of material things, where death lurks around every corner... there we find it so hard to hide, so hard to keep our masks in place, so hard to deceive ourselves. When you consider the prospect of being stripped down to nothing, you awaken to what you really want, what really matters, and what you really have. I think beauty is more beautiful in Africa. My favorite line from the story is this reflection from one of the characters right before they die: "I have thought we are each like a unique bead. Our God strings us together in ways that make Him happy. In ways that we may find His promises in each other."Oh how I love how He does that! less
