Order of the Seers
review 1: My rating is an average, between a 3 for construction and a 5 for world-building. This novel does what the best urban fantasy does -- depicts the contemporary world shifted every so slightly. It adds the supernatural to the ordinary and then extends the logic of the existing power structures in a way that is both believable and terrifying. It also does one of those things I love so much: It chews through plot. It doesn't rely on one big reveal for all the narrative impact. Instead, it raises the stakes over and over again for the characters, adding complications and obstructions and the best kind of layers. For me, the construction issues are solely those of a manuscript that hasn't been through a rigorous developmental editing (the novel is self-published). It sometimes d... moreigresses when it should speed up, and sometimes leaps ahead without a little necessary preparation. That said, I am looking forward to reading the next installation in the series, and I'm cranky that a major publishing house hasn't picked up this novel and given it the distribution it deserves.
review 2: This is a thrilling fantasy with great character drama and suspense. I first became aware of the Order of the Seers when I met the author at Awesome-Con and I'm glad I stopped by Ms. Murphy's booth. I fell in love with these characters, especially Liam and Alessandra. The romance in this story is present and sensual without overpower the plot as a whole. The interpersonal reactions both romantic, platonical and familial all drive these characters in a story that is a chilling social commentary with a fantastical presence. less
