review 1: Baxter has an amazing touch with characters. Even in the short story genre, he grabs you very quickly and paints detailed characters in a brief acquaintance. He must've been pretty depressed about humans, though, when he wrote this. I am pressed to find any uplifting moments to balance the austere and gritty presentation, but that said, I am enriched by reading this collection. I will now happily move over to Chick Lit to refresh myself.
review 2: Charles Baxter is a gifted writer. He won the 2011 Rea Award for Short Stories, so I figured this collection, published in 2011, would be an excellent place to get to know him. The jurors, when awarding the Rea Award, said Baxter was "a writer of elegant sentences, an expert in the mechanics of dramatic narration,
... moreand a master of psychological exile, which is the unexotic but special terrain of the short story." What they didn't tell me was how dull his stories would be. Yes, Baxter is a gifted writer, and I imagine he's a fabulous teacher, however the twenty-four stories in this collection didn't resonate with me. I found myself checking to see how many more stories I needed to read until the end - never a good sign. less

Great title story. Most of the other stories are first-rate.
