review 1: There's not much on offer here in the way of original scholarship. The author's hectoring tone and pejorative-filled diatribes (however much they might be merited) on the subject of First Consul/Emperor Napoleon are unproductive and tiring. Furthermore, the stated aim of the book (as elaborated in its introduction)--to provide an international context for the Napoleonic Wars, rather than focusing on the person and career of Napoleon--hits wide of the mark, and generally recapitulates a diplomatic history of the First Empire that is of course already well-worn territory for historians of the period. Perhaps useful for a lay reader who is untutored in the period, but fairly pointless for anyone else.
review 2: An enlightening look at the Napoleonic Wars. The auth
... moreor does not delve into details about each battle, or how the wars were fought, but rather gives a detailed overview of the political, social and economic impact of the wars of Napoleon. While there is some detail about the major battles, this is limited more to the consequences of the fighting rather than focusing on the particular manoeuvres. If you are looking for how the wars were fought and what the generals did, look elsewhere.A bit dry in places but informative none the less. I learned a great deal about the political and historical ramifications of the Napoleonic Wars. less
