review 1: A dark, twisty tale of a misbehaving young man who has been sent home from college to find his mother and sister engaged in more misbehavior! The humor is black, and the story is a realistic reflection of the Victorian Age, where social status is a flimsy protection from utter ruin. I liked everything about the way the story was told, especially the portrayal of the young protagonist as completely missing not-so-subtle plot points that we readers - and the rest of the characters - are on to. This is the fourth book by this author that I've read, and I've loved all of them. I wish he wrote more!
review 2: What an exceptional book this was! From the description I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but it seemed intriguing. I loved how the story kept deepenin
... moreg and twisting about just as I thought I had my head around it. I did figure it out but only just before the big reveal, which was perfectly fine by me. Most surprising was how much I enjoyed hating, and then becoming sympathetic to, the young narrator. He's just awful in just about every way - selfish to say the least - but you never forget that he is a child. Rather I think the character unintentionally never lets you forget, because he would absolutely say he's a grown up. Anyway, I thought the way he was written was absolutely brilliant. less

It was as complex - if not as long - as the Quincunx, and less rewarding.

Slow moving plot and animal cruelty...I couldn't finish it.

Started really well, fizzled out at the end.
