review 1: I haven't read any books in the Laundry series, so this was the first time I was exposed to the series . It starts off rather abruptly, with little to no explanation as to the setting, which is somewhat expected considering that it's part of a large mythos. However, once you get your bearings, things get really interesting really fast. Surprisingly, there's quite a bit of wry, British humor in the book and I wasn't expecting that, which is a good thing considering the Lovecraftian horrors in the book. I'm definitely going to check out other books in the series.
review 2: I read this because of its Hugo nomination, but I didn't really love it. It was kind of gross and took too long to get started for a novella. Also I didn't love Stross's writing style. It was e... morentertaining, but hard to follow. I'm interested to see how his Hugo nominated novel compares in style. That being said, it was a creative story and the ending earned the book an extra star. Enjoyable, but not award quality. less
