review 1: I've finally come to like short stories and this book has one of my all time favorites, "Hero Absorbs Major Damage", a first person narrative about an action hero in a video game. (He's more sensitive than he looks and is struggling with some existential issues.) Also loved "Designer Emotion 47" a snarky/hilarious shareholder's report given by a CEO who'd fit in with the 'Wolf of Wall Street' gang. Most of the other stories are gems too, just not quite the diamonds these are.
review 2: The hard part of coming late to the party reading wise is that the comparisons have already been made. Hey, this guy reminds me of Philip K. Dick, Douglas Adams and George Saunders combined!Charles Yu does show his influences and put them to good use,but there's more to his writ
... moreing than that. He's also got a unique ability to make the reader care about the hero of a video game, or a zombie sadly watching a first person shooter game in a retail store, or a red shirt trying to get out of the part of his contract that requires him to die while collecting samples on an alien planet. The infusion of empathy and imagination into Charles Yu's knowledge of pop culture and science is what makes his stories unique and a pleasure to read. This is dessert reading, but it's gourmet dessert. less

Hm. Some of these stories are so innovative and thought provoking...some less so. Worth reading.

Some of the stories were decent, some were really lousy. A very unusual writer.

Short stories. Very weird and rabbit-hole-esque, but I liked them.
