review 1: Charley Harper is a great modern illustrator, whose colorful, geometric and linear creatures look like the creations of no other artist. This is a counting book and an animal book. But it's also a little more. It introduces children to some nouns and verbs that aren't typically found in board books of this type, and in that way it is very winning. It's got, for instance, a "ladybug lounging" (yay for alliteration!) and "water gliders striding" (yay for assonance and consonance!). My only complaint (but I'm hardly complaining, really) is that some of the illustrations are very abstract. The chickadees are circles that resemble nuclear biohazard symbols more than they do birds; the water gliders are all lines and dots and concentric circles. Interesting, indeed, but... more probably difficult for very young children to conceptualize.
review 2: Cool, same idea as ABCs--"best of" Charley Harper's work, as a board book for counting. Not as nice as the ABC's book, though. There was only 1-10, and some of them were blow-ups of parts of original works, which didn't do it for me. I was thinking of including the tongue-in-cheek sentence "Not as engaging as the ABCs book" in this review, but I didn't know how many of you would take me seriously. As it is, the librarian who checked this out for David (who is an acquaintance of mine) quipped, "I would have thought she had mastered these by now". Touche. less
