review 1: A slow-moving but engaging story about a recluse who gradually returns to the world when he finds a painted portrait of a woman who looks likes his deceased wife but can't possibly be her. Peter Byerly's investigation into the origin of the painting leads to a mystery potentially involving a document (real or forged?) used by Shakespeare to create A Winter's Tale. The author uses changes in time period (from the present, to the development of Peter's relationship with his wife, to the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries) to fill in the pieces of the puzzle.

... moread more. About three quarters of the way through it became a bit implausible - things conveniently fell into place. But who cares? It was a romance, a mystery, a thriller all in one. Plus set against the backdrop of antique books. I look forward to the author's next book! less
