review 1: In 1915, a lesser member of the powerful Massey family was shot dead by his teenage housemaid on his doorstep, leading to a sensational trial that gripped the attention of Torontonians otherwise inundated with news of the war. Fun to read more about the city's past. Not earth-shaking insights - some cliches, and based on a rather brief trial and some newspaper articles - but it was decent popular history and I enjoyed it.
review 2: This was a feast of information, and I found the first half of the book challenging to read because of the inundation of facts and not enough about the murder trial. However, upon finishing the book I felt edified on many levels. In general, a detailed view of life in the Toronto area during World War I was depicted, and specifics
... moreof the newspaper, industrial, social, legal evolution in early twentieth century included. As a Governor General's Medal (Vincent Massey) winner in 1956, I found the stories of the Massey family intriguing and impressive. The story of the meek murderess seemed secondary, but it linked all the issues together. The lawyers and the judge in the case were very interesting characters. less
