review 1: Breed is frustrating in that it has a terrific premise and some nearly transcendent moments of horror, but too often pulls the reader away from the most compelling story threads to focus on familiar cat-and-mouse business. Elements that are revealed late in the novel could have been explored earlier to deepen the tragic deterioration of the parents and add to the terror faced by the children. Some of the supporting characters deserved more time, especially Bernard, who could have been used to more interesting effect than merely as an object of pity and guilt for Leslie late in the game. And yet, these flaws only stand out because of how good the book is much of the time. Novak/Spencer has found a unique spin on parent-child relationships and the often contradictory emotion... mores they engender.
review 2: Very disturbing and thought-provoking; this will make readers question how far will couples go to create the next generation. To be honest, I had to put this book down a few times because it was horrifying having to experience the transformation of this wealthy couple from dignified, sophisticated, and content individuals to the most basal animalistic versions of themselves. There are some very graphic depictions of cannibalism and sexual content; but, again, the scariest aspect of the novel was the couple's transformation and the fact that their own children have been living in fear of their parents for a decade. In addition, the ever changing backdrop, e.g. the Twisden mansion, adds to the creepiness. All in all it was a great read, and I highly recommend it to fans of the horror genre. less
