review 1: This is an excellent, powerful, thought-provoking read. It was hard to put down, and (like lots of books that I really love) - a world away from what I know. I can't judge on its actual proximity to real life, but from the acknowledgements at the end of the book, it sounds like the author spent a long time with those living in this precarious situation. It's written from changing perspectives, jumping around chronologically too, but it is easy to follow. It left me with a lot to think about - would strongly recommend this, though with a trigger warning of rape and sexual violence.
review 2: I like the illustration of a perspective from a minority. Nigerian sex workers working in Brussels - that's so far removed from me but a picture of the global sex industry so
... more I want to learn about that. There's something about the way it's written that meant I didn't really connect with the characters. Unfortunately it's hard to care about these women, even if terrible things did happen to them and they lived a life of suffering yet attempted to triumph and make a better life for themselves. That said, I do appreciate the way Unigwe demonstrates how different conditions of poverty drive people to certain choices. less

A worthwhile read, although I may dislike men for just a bit until I get over it.

Good but depressing. Only gave 2 stars, as it reminds me too much of my work.
