Trying to get my act together (training “update”)

Another week of recuperating from my lower back episode – I am getting tired of writing about this stupid back issue. There is not much to write about in this update, because I want to make sure that I’m near 100%  . . . well 80% before getting into the nitty gritty of training.

Although I was not able to run at all this week, I have noticed moderate improvements in my back. I have been spending more time streching and doing lower back exericses that I learned years ago in physical therapy (I’m thinking that I may start attending yoga classes soon). Last Wednesday, I thought that I felt strong enough to do some treadmill work (because it was so cold outside), but my lower back (and legs) felt so tight that I could not finish the run. Actually, “finish” is the wrong word to use because I was on the treadmil for only 4-5 minutes. So, I guess it would have been better to say that I could not start the run. Although I did not start/complete my treadmill run, I managed to have a pretty intensive elipitical workout. That’s something . . . I guess.

Over the weekend, I noticed a greater range of motion, so I decided to check out a Zumba class on Saturday morning. Because of the holidays, I have missed three Zumba classes (my normal class is on Mondays). During (and after) the class, I did not have any issues with my back. Although Zumba is not running, I think that may back issues may be behind me . . . for the most part. I’m planning to do a run today after work to see if I can salvage my training plan.

The improvements  in my range of motion – last week I could not lift my leg too far off of the ground; and now, I can lift it near waist level without any back stabbing (no pun) pain. Hopefully, I can get back to normal in a week.

I even broke out my old spin shoes and hit up a spin class for some extra cardio. Man oh man, I have not attended a spin class in years. That said, I really enjoyed the class and will try to incorporate more spin into my training regimen. . . if my training regimen ever gets back to normal.  I do not know why I stopped going  to spin class. At one point, I attended 1-2 classes a week. Ripped ride was one of my favorite classes, because it used dumbbells to incorporate an upper body workout into the class.

Well that’s it for the this training “update”; hopefully, next week’s update will be filled with many days of exercise.
