review 1: I was so inside this while I was reading it, the voice of the main character was so distinct. I was reading it on a pleasurable level to find out what happened to her and her love story, the story of a woman out of place in academia, but also to gain the rare feeling that sometimes happens with novels, where you realize what it must be like for another person, their experience of being in the world.
review 2: What I admire about Adiche is her unrelenting, steely observer's eye and how she is able to cut through to the heart of the matter. Her observations about being black in the land of 'White Privilege' were honest, funny, sad and searingly brutal. Yet the love story still held up and I was invested in the characters.
