review 1: Honestly a bit disappointed by this short essay on feminism. As an author I hold Adichie in very high regard, and in terms of composition this essay is great. It is well-written, concise, powerful and her argumentation should delight anyone who appreciates well-constructed rhetoric. The feminist theory behind the writing however was a bit too basic for me. Adichie defines men and women based on the simple biological differences and never really moves beyond this antiquated dikotomi(LGBT's are never mentioned). Another problem I had with the essay is the many examples of cultural sexism that I found very hard to relate to. I realize that Adichie draws on her own experiences from Nigeria which is culturally very different from Denmark, where I live(and this is definetly not ... moreto say that feminism has outplayed it's role in Denmark). But when she makes general claims like: Men does not care about how they present themselves at work, only women are expected to know how to cook, and men are not interested in parenting, as a male who loves to cook and babysit these examples provoked me more than they provided me with good arguments for why we need feminism.I think this essay is a very well-crafted introduction to basic feminist theory. I was just hoping for a little more ambition.
review 2: This short essay is a modified version of a lecture that Adichie gave in 2012 at the TEDxEuston, an annual conference focused on Africa. This is an enlightening, thought provoking and excellent discussion on feminism, examine Nigerian culture in particular and cultural norms regarding men and women, particularly in business. She explores how the word 'feminist' is often viewed as an insult rather than a positive thing in Nigeria. Fascinating, well thought out and very good. I would read more by her. less
