review 1: Well. Hm. I'm not sure what I think of this book. The obvious place to start is that it's a modern day version of "Midsummer Night's Dream." It's a frenetic dance that pulls the readers along almost as much as the characters. It took me almost four months of picking the book up and putting it down before I finally brought it on a plane and forced myself to read it. It's a book with many layers which will intrigue some readers but jus annoyed the recovering English major in me.
review 2: I went back and forth between two and three stars for this book and finally decided that if I wrote down a comparison list of likes and dislikes I would probably like a few more things than I would dislike so I will go with three stars. Honestly, I couldn't wait to be done with
... more this book. I'm reading it for a challenge, so I had to finish it or choose something else, otherwise I might have given up on it. The first half of the book was fun and interesting, but it then began to become apparent that the fantasy part of the story was not going to play a very big part in the plot (even though it was the entire plot!) and it bogged down in too much (mortal) character development. I chose the book because I am familiar with San Francisco and it was fun to travel around the city with the author. And I also appreciated the endless circles and connections between all of the characters and storylines although they eventually required too much effort to keep track of. And to be fair, I need to brush up on Midsummer Night's Dream because the manipulation of that story line seemed a stretch. I found the far too numerous course and gratuitous references to sex and sexuality distasteful - to what end did we have to suffer through a room full of walking penises and flying vaginas? Because of all of the interconnected story lines, this might be a book that requires re-reading - I might understand the baffling Molly/Peabo subplot better (or at all!), but once is enough for me. less

I have to say--I loved it. An enchanting mixture of sad and sweet.
