review 1: It was good! While I’m not a huge fan of the Bond-esque “oh wow I’m just a handsome P.I. surrounded by gorgeous women and they all want to sleep with me” spy novel genre, it worked in this case. The plot premise was good, the writing smooth and professional, and I liked the art/history facets of the story. I was surprised and pleased that Orcutt portrayed the monotonous and painstaking research necessary to solve the crime in addition to the requisite action. The love interest sub-plot was unlikely and caused me to roll my eyes a couple of times, but hey, it’s fiction. Orcutt left the door open for future novels involving Dakota and I could imagine him developing a successful series involving this character.
review 2: I have enjoyed all of the Spenser
... more novels, but Dakota Stevens and his sassy sidekick Svetlana, are my new favorite detectives. A Real Piece of Work is the first in a series about a private investigator who truly investigates. In this story, what begins as a simple case of lost and found becomes a tangled multi-national, multi-generational mystery with twists and shocking revelations. If you pay attention to the details, armchair sleuths *may* be able to figure it out…but I doubt it. less
