review 1: Really enjoyed this book. I think that every Bible teacher should read it. By making us face the reality of 'pervasive interpretive pluralism'(even those who claim to believe in biblical authority actually disagree on what it teaches on many things, including quite crucial issues)he doesn't weaken our confidence in the Bible, but in biblicism! Rather, he helps start to clear the ground for putting our confidence in the Bible on the better foundation of Christ, who he rightly sees as the focus and the interpretive centre of Scripture. This keeps the focus on the gospel of Christ, and allows for ambiguity and indeterminacy on many other issues, and so moving towards a unity-in-diversity for the Church, as we focus on what - or who - is central and leave many other things ope... moren for conversation and respectful disagreement. I would just want to include something on the role of the Spirit in this conversation and in opening up the Scriptures to us, but that was probably too much to ask for the scope of this book.
review 2: This is an interesting book. The author gives a different way to interpret the Bible. I don't agree with some of his thoughts but I have to say those are interesting. Christianity shouldn't be afraid of saying we don't know all the answers and shouldn't think that they know everything about bible. Of course, this easy to say with a few sentences but I think this topic would be really interesting to discuss. less
