review 1: What a wonderful book. I'm a sucker for books that use myth as a framework and when you add in that I live in Selkirk (yes home of the Asylum and thirty miles from gimli) the world she creates is like a warm slice of dark Icelandic bread waiting to be eaten. Ive been to Gimli countless times in both summer and winter and always found it almost mystical-great inland sea and old world familiarity alongside resort life. I first saw this novel in the Tergensen's store mentioned in the book, and the store itself ismarvelous. Even after figuring out the twist halfway through the final part of the book and the return to Iceland is rewarding, and I think that the final trick on Freya is that the reader knows who her mother is long before she does. We wait in anticipation for her ... moreto reach the aha moment we know is there. A great read.
review 2: Enjoyed this very much. It's the author's first novel, both a coming-of-age story and an exploration of the American/Canadian Icelandic background of the narrator. It is also a splendid depiction of bipolar disorder (manic depression), and the effect mental illness and suicide can have within a family. "New Iceland", the Icelandic colony in Winnipeg, has become old itself by the time the events of the story take place, and the themes of diaspora and the pull of a lost ancestral world, and the tensions when it meets the real world it left behind, are interesting and have parallels in other communities (the language question is surely an important one for many). Loved the Icelandic parts of the story too. Beautiful. less
