review 1: A haunting take on contemporary notions of beauty entwined with traditional fairy tales. These poems are dark, but unfortunately do reflect the ways in which many teen girls struggle with comparing themselves to media depictions of beauty. It's a difficult collection to read in one sitting - better to space them out and let them simmer. Lots of food for thought and plenty of good discussion potential.
review 2: Read this as an antidote to The Goldfinch -- after an 886 page/two month (well spent!) journey, enjoyed reading this book of poetry in less than an hour. Bought it on a recommendation from the Booksmith, and really resonated with the feminist spin on Fairy Tales and adolescence (maybe especially since I have a daughter teetering on the edge of puberty..
... more.) Particular favorites: "If Tampons Were for Guys", "Sweet Nothings", and "Vindictive Punctuation." less
