review 1: There was a good idea in this book, and some of the historical stuff was interesting, but there was so much in this book that didn't need to be there and several wonky problems with character, that I just find I can't recommend it. I like the premise, I liked Violet and a few other characters, but some of the circumstances or happenings were just too easy.I did figure out who the killer was when we met them, so maybe that's why I kept rolling my eyes at the book and it took me forever to finish it. I really wish the author and editor had taken another pass at the book - it could have been really good and full of intrigue.
review 2: I rarely write a review of a book I didn't finish, but am making a special exception for this one, as I read about 1/3rd of it. I'm
... more honestly shocked that this novel has any positive reviews - it's meandering, boring, overwrought, and tedious. A great premise, you'd think by 30% into the book something related to the major plot promised by the book description would have occurred. No such luck and no motivation to find out when or if it happens. Disappointing. less

Compelling characters, gripping story, impeccably detailed research. A fun and fascinating read. :-)

There were too many threads to this book. The story went in too many directions.
