review 1: For a metalhead, even an "old" one (meaning over 25), it's impossible not to like this book. Krovatin's realistic and nostalgia-inspiring tale put me right back in those combat boots, smoking Marlboros and just waiting for the next Ozzfest or Central Philly metal show. Furthermore, his ability to produce the compulsiveness, or the angst-ridden act first/think later nature of his characters is admirable.I want to *love* this book, but as a reader I have to admit its shortcomings: a romance that falls together too easy; a wavering, not quite defined central conflict, and a present tense narrator that sometimes slinks out of focus. The constant threat of the narrator's anger (identified as "the venom") erupting eventually anesthetized me to the possibility of it happening. Wh... moreen predictably the character went stark-raving (his girlfriend shoved to the ground), I found my eyes rolling. With these criticisms aside, I have to disclose my reading exposure to YA is small, and therefore, if the easy romance, continual nagging/grinding on a point, or the lack of a central conflict (read: reader understood, well defined conflict) are themes are hallmarks of YA, well. Then my apologies.Otherwise, this is an enjoyable read, with some rather clever turns of phrase, inspiring black and white comic graphics and parallel story, and if not anything else a ride back to first girlfriends and emerging social life whilst maintaining one's "identity." After all, we wouldn't give up our band t-shirts and scowls for anything...One of a kind, Krovatin has done admirably with this book!
review 2: Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death in young people resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year for every suiced amoung young people 100 people try to comite suicide over 14% of highschool student consider suicide and 7% acually commite suicide. venomous by christopher krovatin is a kind of realistic fiction that reveals what happens when a teenager is bullied and he is finally pushed to the edge.locke wants not to be bullied but know matter how hard he trys he still gets bullied so he really considers suicide. An excerpt from the book that illustrates ways to cope with bulling is " locke you have to leave it go." said renee " well how am i supose to do that?" asked locke " go realeve your stress somewhere else."if you like this book you may also like pursuit of honor by vince flynn because its an exciting book and it keeps you interested less
