review 1: I like some of the practical examples in this book, including their real-life application questions which would make perfect Do Now questions for students. I also like the media connections for close reading, such as analyzing song lyrics and video game narrative. while many of the strategies are good in theory, the direct instruction approach doesn't fit my teaching style, so I'll have to think of better ways to model close reading techniques with more student feedback.
review 2: The strategies seem so simple, but just when I started thinking, "Yeah, but when my students try that it doesn't work because. . . " Lehman and Roberts swoop in and explain exactly how to fix the problem I thought they were overlooking. I haven't read a lot of books about close readi... moreng, but at this point, if you can only read one, this is it. Lehman and Roberts "get it." They use real classroom examples, and their love for teaching, reading and students comes through loud and clear. This one is a winner. less
