review 1: Another novel about a young writer in Brooklyn/NYC trying to come to grips with the modern condition. Except this one has more in common with Dostoevsky's great spiritual novels than it does with Sex and the City. The fact that a major publisher didn't publish this (the author is an editor at Harper's AND had a "hit" nonfiction book...) is striking. Until you realize it's much too "old-fashioned" for the current literati to handle. What a magnificent book.
review 2: I don't know how this book came to be on my "Want to Read" shelf, but as I am trying to whittle down that list and it was available to borrow on Overdrive from the library, I read it. It kind of dragged on. Picked up a bit half way through, but for the life of me I cannot figure out the ending.
... moreI almost said, "Whaaaa?" out loud when I turned the page only to arrive at "Acknowledgements". My next step is to read some GoodReads reviews from other folks to see if I am out on a limb here by myself! my recommendation is: give it a miss - there are too many good books to read! less

The book is slow to start but give it time. It picks up at the end and it goes very quickly.

The writing was wonderful. Loved all the characters. Sad, yet beautiful.

Doesn't quite get going.
