review 1: This one got better as it went along, which isn't saying a lot. The writing style, which initially seemed workmanlike, grew on me. I could wrap up the plot in two sentences, but that doesn't seem nice, so I'll say this: Sophie's conversion was interesting. Stories about lapsed Catholics are a dime a dozen, so it was refreshing to read about someone going the opposite way. It made her actions plausible, but the end of the book seemed pretty melodramatic nonetheless. On the whole, I wish I'd spent the time reading something else.
review 2: This was good. I am torn between three and four stars. I think it got unfairly bumped down a bit for me because I had just come off of a streak of horror/magical realism, and so it actually felt a bit mundane to read a story ... morethat was just about regular people and their relationships. But this was very cleverly constructed and engaging and keeps you guessing until the very end. Recommend, on balance. less
