review 1: Definitely hits on many topics that I haven't read before in fiction. It brought many sad truths to light about social perception and how fear of acceptance can turn people into monsters. One twist in the book, which I won't mention, didn't sit well with me. Of all the tough things these characters had to go through, guys and girls, there was one at the end that I didn't think was necessary because it ruined the good aspect one character was finally allowed to have. This book was generally dark and depressing, so if you aren't in the mood for that, I wouldn't suggest reading. However, the book was written very well, and each twist of plot is revealed throughout the book in a way that kept me unable to walk away until I finished.
review 2: I am fairly torn
... moreon how to think about this book. I read it in one sitting but I did a fair amount of skimming. Since this was Rice's first novel, I plan on reading some of his other books because I have found interviews where even he says that this book was rough. I thought the overall storyline was interesting enough but was better suited for a shorter work. Rice had so many characters, time jumps, etc. that I found it difficult to keep up with what was going on at any given time. It was a good summer night read but I do not know if I would necessarily recommend it to anyone. He is great at descriptions (although - like his mother - they can be a bit much at times). I love the city of New Orleans so one plus of this novel was that I was clearly able to picture everything.Given everything it was a decent first novel and I am interested to see how his writing has developed since publishing A Density of Souls. less
