review 1: ARC provided by NetGalleythis book was amazing! so much so, that i'm having a difficult time expressing myself because i don't know where to begin! so many reviews give short synopisis of the book that too many spoilers arise, so rather than rehash the story in a summary, i will just express what i felt from this book...this book was filled with many characters who had been through incredibly difficult times in their past yet continued to damage themselves in their present while trying to find themselves no matter what their current age. it was about how life goes full circle in a world where the circle is quite small and much more connected then we realize. it was about love that is both damaging, and hurtful even though quite genuine from both the giver and the receiver... more. it was about how at the end, all we really want is to be accepted with or without all our faults, especially from those closest to us. it was about growth and coming of age, malicious evil that exists in every day people, and about how jealousy can twist a person so deeply, that no evil is too evil.this book has so many twists and turns and various characters who all play such relevant parts, that no matter how small their piece appears, they ALL matter! so often as a reader, we can figure out the next scene or the conclusion of a book...not in The Snow Garden...too often then not, my mouth would fall open from shock, surprise and a whole lot of "no way---that's so twisted!" moments. it kept me up late into the night twice, neglected household and motherly duties, but it was worth it. :)after reading this novel, i really would love to have a conversation with christopher rice to see how his imagination works. i then want to go have drinks together and hang out so we can become best of friends. i loved the letter at the end because it explains so much of how he comes up with his stories and how he relates to parts of his story. this made him not only an author but a person we can all relate to...now i'm just curious as to whether or not the gift of being such a talented author is inherited or taught by an amazing parent who's books i've loved since my teenage years... :)
review 2: There was something about this book that really bothered me. I loved the art history and the Bosch references but the pace of the novel was very slow. By the time I was halfway through it I was still waiting for the pace to pick up and sweep me away into the story. I do have to say there was something very haunting about Kathryn that really drew me into her world. Maybe that's what bothered me. Or maybe it was the frenetic end of the book that seemed disjointed and lacked closure. There was just too many plot twists and it was like a soap opera with an ever-changing plot. I know most people won't agree but I really loved Kathryn as a character and think Rice did an impeccable job fleshing her out. The other characters were all a little too hard to believe. Sure they were interesting but they seemed to lack substance and any real thoughts and ideals and seemed too over the top. Perhaps that's what a college setting earns us though as most people tend to be a little unbelievable and utterly confusing during their college years- so maybe Jesse and Randal and April are in fact very believable college characters. Otherwise the older characters who don't have the excuse of youth seemed like caricatures of Rice's imagination. less

Christopher Rice never disappoints, in my humble opinion, and this was no exception.
