review 1: Wow, this was an amazing book. I've read Anne Rice a lot over the years and enjoyed it. Because of this I've shied away from reading any of her son's work for fear that it wouldn't be as good. I was terribly, horribly wrong on that account. The Vines is an amazing story for those of us who love good old Louisiana charm and magic. If you have visited or are lucky enough to live in that city, Christopher Rice will take you right back to those gorgeous plantations and the mysterious ways of the south with his writing. The Vines builds on the idea that there are spirits that guide life and death and introduces a different take on how these spirits can be manipulated and controlled (or set free as the case may be). As the story progresses Caitlin and Blake learn more ab... moreout these spirits and what drives the vines at Spring House. The mystery unfolds and the journey is skillfully written. I would recommend this one to those who enjoy reading books dealing with the supernatural or stories set in historic New Orleans. I received my copy from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
review 2: I am a big fan of Christopher Rice's writing, often beautiful, always inviting, sometimes poetic and that is still the case. However, this story is much less than the sum of its parts. It feels like several feverish plot ideas cobbled together because it's "supernatural" thriller and that's allowed. The potential for exploration into race relations and slave history as well as gay hate crimes feels like a wasted opportunity. I've always enjoyed his novels better on a second read, so maybe I will need to edit this then and the disjointed, nonsensical plotting is actually a byproduct of my excitement at wanting to read this so much for the first time! Fingers crossed! less

More like a 3.5 but closer to a 3 than a 4, I think. A really enjoyable read.

Humid horror that gets under your skin and just about eats you alive. Bravo!
